QUEENS, N.Y. — Louie’s Pizzeria & Restaurant, an Elmhurst staple, is boarded up and likely will be for the next two weeks, as the owner and his father recover in the hospital.
Saturday night, Louie Suljovic and his father, known as Pops, were working in the pizzeria when they saw a 61-year-old woman get attacked by two men. The men pushed her from behind and stole her purse.
“My father saw a woman getting attacked and he starts chasing after people. My dad yells my name and I follow suit,” Suljovic said.

The father-son duo chased down the attackers and fought them long enough for the police to get there and arrest the two men.
During the fight, both Suljovic and Pops were stabbed. Both suffered deflated left lungs.
“I couldn’t breath for like two days, I was on some pretty heavy medication,” Suljovic said.
Pops is recovering in a hospital room down the hall.
“You know what, for a 68-year-old man who’s been stabbed nine times, he’s doing pretty damn good,” said Suljovic.
Recovering in his hospital bed, Suljovic says he’s fed up with the violence that’s increased on New York streets.
“Enough is enough with all this crime and this craziness, somebody’s got to stand up for our people,” said Suljovic. “It’s sad, these people attacked a 60-plus year old Asian woman that’s defenseless.”
While they continue to heal, the doors of Louie’s Pizzeria will stay shut, much to the dismay of customers who have become regulars since doors opened in 2009.
“I’ve seen everybody change, grow up, from little kids to adults to parents, they become parents themselves, they bring their kids to have their first slice,” Suljovic said.
They are missed by employees at neighboring businesses, as well, many of whom have become good friends over the years.
“This little space feels so empty without them, I’m not used to seeing it closed,” said Tania Fernandez who works next door.
Employees in the area say the recent spike in violence has them concerned.
“I do not feel safe in this neighborhood, no,” Fernandez said.
“It’s just getting tough around here,” said Vanessa Varon, who works at a pharmacy across the street. “I guess everywhere in New York’s like that now.”
At the same time, they say they feel lucky to have such kind, courageous neighbors.
“I’m not even surprised to be honest with you,” said Fernandez. “I know that’s something they would do.”
Despite his injuries, Suljovic said, “I would do it tomorrow again, doesn’t make a difference, enough’s enough.”
“Don’t be scared to help somebody,” Suljovic said. “Don’t pick up your phone to record, pick up the phone to call 911 and to get involved. The more people get involved, the less likely people are to do it.”
Suljovic is hoping to be discharged Wednesday.
Pops will likely have to continue to recover in the hospital a few more days.
Suljovic hopes to have Louie’s Pizzeria back open in a few weeks.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for Louie’s.
The page says the donations will go toward hospital expenses and to help pay the staff while the restaurant is closed.
The two men arrested are facing charges of attempted murder, assault, robbery, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and criminal possession of a weapon, among others.
One man, Robert Whack, 30, was arraigned Tuesday. His bail is set at $500,000. Whack is due back in court Friday.
The co-defendant is awaiting arraignment.
