NEW YORK — Crime data shows shootings are on the rise in the Bronx, with the NYPD reporting shootings are up nearly 34% compared to this time last year.

It comes as two men were found dead in separate shootings in the Bronx this week.

Police said the shooting happened just after 10 p.m. Sunday on East 171st Street near Townsend Avenue in West Concourse.

Police said Sergio Jimenez, 21, was driving when the suspect walked up and began shooting at the car. Jimenez was shot in the head and hit some nearby parked cars. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Police said an 18-year-old woman, who we believe Jimenez was seeing, was also in the car and shot multiple times. She was taken to the hospital and was expected to survive.

NY1 spoke to Jimenez’s father hours after he got the news. He said his son had his whole life ahead of him. He came to the United States from the Dominican Republic as a kid. He leaves behind his two-year-old son.

“I’ve been here waiting, with no sleep, for justice. Justice is the only thing we have left,” said Sergio Jimenez Sr., the victim’s father. "I don’t think about revenge."

A separate shooting in the Bronx happened Sunday around 4 p.m. on the Aqueduct Walk near West Fordham Road in University Heights.

Police said Robert Brown, 62, was sitting on a park bench when a robber shot him. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

No arrests have been made in either shooting.
