NEW YORK — Police Commissioner Dermot Shea is clarifying how many NYPD officers are assigned to help keep the subway safe.

He told NY1 that there had been roughly 2,500 officers assigned to the NYPD's Transit Bureau, with an additional 500 deployed on a daily basis several months ago.

But as of this week, Shea said that number is being boosted by another 250 officers on the trains.

Shea noted officers will be present beyond rush hour.

“We're going to prioritize when ridership is most, but we're a 24-hour operation, so you should expect to see officers 24 hours a day,” the police commissioner said. “Certainly we have more ridership during the business hours, rush hour, and it dwindles out as the night goes on, but sometimes that's when some of the crime happens, so we take all that into account."

Shea said the department will continue to work with the MTA to keep New Yorkers safe.

MTA Leadership has said it wants a police presence that will deter any issues that could come up.
