Homicide Detective Brianna Constantino and Officer Shamika Thomas are making sure they didn’t miss anything. They returned to the crime scene where someone left two infant boys in the back of a Bronx building. They were unconscious, in plastic bags, on the cold concrete where the garbage is kept.
"There's a cone here. that’s where EMS workers found baby 1. We walked to the back," Constantino said.
The second baby was found a few steps away.
The super of the building on College Avenue, Renford Cole, is the one who called for help after spotting their bodies.
"I saw something partially dressed like a baby, but I thought it was a toy or something like that. I touched it and it felt spongey," Cole said.
In the days since that awful discovery, the detective duo has been going around the block, searching for any information that can help find the mother of the boys or whoever left them there. They reviewed hours of surveillance videos and talked to neighbors.
"They seemed really surprised and willing to help out the community, but as it stands now, nobody seems to know what's going on," Thomas said.
The investigators have called dozens of hospitals in New York City, New Jersey and Westchester County in case the new mother is seeking care.
"We know that the mother of these children, it's possible that she is in pain. She may need someone to speak to, and first and foremost, she may need medical attention," Constantino said.
The building’s super believes whoever went back there knows the neighborhood well. The area where the babies were found is hard to access.
That’s not enough to the crack a case that has gripped the attention and hearts of these detectives.
"Those babies didn't have a voice, but we are their voice now. Yes, it was disheartening to see a crime scene like this, but we are going to do everything in our power to solve this,” Thomas said.
