Federal officials say JFK airport is the country’s main entry point for international mail, and international drug smuggling.

"It may not seem like it right now, but this is the nation's border right here at JFK," said Jim Carroll, director of National Drug Control Policy.

  • Preliminary more drug overdoses seen this year during COVID-19 pandemic

  • So far this year 800,000 pounds of narcotics confiscated and seized nationally

  • Customs and Border Protection said it's fighting against drug smuggling, counterfeit goods and undocumented immigration

  • Head of Border Protection admits many undocumented immigrants are looking for a better life

Carroll toured Kennedy's mail facility Friday afternoon along with Mark Morgan the acting commissioner for Customs and Border Protection and Gary Barksdale, chief postal inspector.

They tout from border to border they’re fighting so called drug terrorists killing Americans during a very difficult year for everyone.

"Sadly the COVID pandemic, what we have seen is an increase, at least all of the preliminary numbers show an increase in the number of overdoses," said Carroll who's also known as President Trump's drug czar.

“This year to date we have confiscated and seized 800,000 pounds of narcotics, 800,000 pounds," said Morgan.

Officials say China was a big problem in shipping the deadly drug fentanyl to the U.S., but that's been drastically reduced since last year.  Morgan explained criminal organizations are using other methods.

“Are now starting to ship fentanyl and precursor chemicals to other places like Mexico. And Mexico is sending it right to our southern border," he said.

The current head of Border Protection also spoke about the controversial issue of immigration enforcement.

“I’m not saying they’re not hard workers, I’m not saying the vast majority of them are not good people, I’m not saying that at all. What I’m saying is that’s the law we have right now you’re supposed to come here legally. And if not the law says you should be removed.”

And he said anyone who’s violent definitely has to be arrested and deported.

“There’s another area that we refer to as criminal aliens. Here, not only illegally but they’ve committed an additional crime while they’re here. Those are the individuals that are the primary focus of organizations like ICE.”

Customs Protection officers are the ones posted at the country’s border to stop illegal entry.  Morgan stated he knows many immigrants who sneak into the U.S. are trying to escape very tough conditions.

“We are not saying that if we were in the same position, we wouldn’t try to to get a better life for ourselves or our family, we’re not saying that. We’re just saying that the current law says if you come here illegally there are consequences.”

He says if people don’t like immigration laws, they have to keep fighting to change them.

Until then, he vows his officers will continue to deport and protect the border.
