Demonstrators will take to the streets of the nation's capitol on Friday to commemorate the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington. For a new generation of activists, the words of Martin Luther King Jr. on this historic day in 1963 still ring true.
Brian Sarfo is the co-head of education at Freedom March NYC. He implements workshops and training programs for young activists like himself who are looking to get involved in the fight for social justice.
"It's crucial to not let the dreams of Dr. King go away," says Sarfo. "It's disheartening to know that young people who were at the original March on Washington are still fighting for the same rights."
Freedom March NYC is providing transportation for volunteers from New York to Washington in order to participate in Friday's historic event. The group is also joining forces with National Action Network and Martin Luther King III to hold the Committment March, which will focus on police reform and mobilizing voters this November.
Sarfo spoke to NY1's Lewis Dodley about the special significane of this anniversary and the lasting impact he hopes this march will have on future generations.
