Bronx Councilwoman Kristy Marmorato will have big sway over a project — currently a proposal by Bally’s — to build a casino on a golf course in her district.
It’s one of several proposals to build a casino in the New York City region that has become an extremely competitive process. They are all vying for one of three casino licenses up for grabs by the state.

- Marmorato denies any conflict of interest
Before Bally’s project can move forward, it needs Council approval for a zoning change. And typically, the City Council would defer to the local member on that decision — meaning Marmorato.
NY1 has learned that the Bronx councilwoman may have a conflict of interest.
Her brother, Mike Rendino, who is also the chairman of the Bronx Republican Party, worked for a Bally’s competitor — Sands Casino — as a community engagement consultant.
NY1 uncovered video from 2023 from his time there.
“Hi everyone, my name is Mike Rendino,” he tells a local community meeting on Long Island. “Nice to meet you. OK, first of all, let me tell you I do work for Las Vegas Sands, but I am first and foremost one of you. I live in Garden City.”
His employment has not been disclosed publicly until now. Rendino worked for the casino company from December 2022 until April 2024.
Sands is proposing to build a casino on Long Island at the Nassau Coliseum. Sands and Bally’s are directly competing for one of the state’s casino licenses.
Marmorato has publicly criticized the Bally’s bid in her district, and its fate is partially in her hands. A rejection for Bally’s could help Sands.
“We need to redevelop the area and make a beautiful boardwalk with some restaurants, something that families can use. Not gamblers,” Marmorato said in 2023. “Not people who are looking to lose their money and their paychecks or looking to win money. It’s just not what the Bronx needs.”
When NY1 asked her about the potential conflict on Thursday, she would not extensively discuss it or the proposal.
“I make my decision based on my constituents’ needs. And that’s it,” Marmorato said.
Later, Marmorato’s spokesperson sent NY1 the following statement: “Let’s not confuse facts with innuendos. The Bally’s proposal is a land use item in Councilwoman Marmorato’s district, and she will vote on it in accordance with the interests of her constituents — period. To suggest a conflict of interest is a reckless attempt to manufacture controversy where none exists.”
NY1 also received a statement from Rendino.
“There is no there there. I was hired a year before Councilwoman Marmorato was elected, and 10 months before Bally’s even announced they were buying Trump Links. I have not been working for them for almost a year and I was hired to perform very specific community outreach work in communities on Long Island, far from my responsibilities in the Bronx,” he said.
A spokesperson for the City Council told NY1 it is the responsibility of an individual councilmember to disclose any conflicts of interest.
