On Monday, a top Justice Department official ordered Manhattan prosecutors to drop charges against Mayor Eric Adams.
When asked about the news in an interview with NY1, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams said “every New Yorker should be really concerned right now.”
In expressing concern, Williams cited the fact that the case is being dismissed without prejudice, which makes it possible for the case to be refiled later.
“How can you govern a city with hanging over your head?” Williams said.
The memo issued by the DOJ said the court case was interfering with the mayor’s ability to aid President Donald Trump’s crackdown on immigration. Williams said that part of the memo was another concern for him.
The Public Advocate also said the mayor was able to “sidestep the whole court process.”
"As much as he had a right to have his day in court, that's not what happened," he said. "What happened was, he was able to sidestep the whole court process, unlike many of the people the mayor talks about - in our undocumented population, people who are in Rikers pre-trial, who don't have access to that power."
