Together, the Republican heavyweights that tie the group together account for four of the five GOP presidential nominees before Donald Trump won the primaries in three straight election cycles.

The authors of the open letter, released Monday and first reported by USA Today, note they were largely behind a similar effort in 2020 to elect Joe Biden. They warned then that reelecting Trump “would irreparably damage our beloved democracy.”

“We made those announcements months before lies about a stolen election became everyday talking points and six months before Trump incited an insurrection, cheering on a mob of sore losers and sycophants as they tried to use force to overturn the will of the American public,” the letter says.

The Republican alumni acknowledge they disagree with Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on “plenty” of issues.

“The alternative, however, is simply untenable,” they write.

They predict that, at home, Trump would advance “the dangerous goals of Project 2025” and “hurt real, everyday people and weaken our scared institutions.” And abroad, “democratic movements will be irreparably jeopardized as Trump and his acolyte JD Vance kowtow to dictators like Vladimir Putin while turning their backs on our allies,” they write.

The authors say exit polls showed moderate Republicans and conservative independents in swing states lifted Biden to victory in 2020 and urge those groups to vote for Harris in November.

“We’re heartfully calling on these friends, colleagues, neighbors, and family members to take a brave stand once more, to vote for leaders that will strive for consensus, not chaos; that will work to unite, not divide; that will make our country and our children proud,” they write. “Those leaders are Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz.”

Among those who signed the letter were Jean Becker, George H.W. Bush’s post-presidency chief of staff; David Garman, energy undersecretary during the George W. Bush administration; and Christopher Koch and Mark Salter, former chiefs of staff to McCain.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said the letter is “hilarious because nobody knows who these people are.”

“They would rather see the country burn down than to see President Trump successfully return to the White House to Make America Great Again,” Cheung said in a statement.

Romney has said he will “absolutely not” vote for Trump but has not endorsed Harris. George W. Bush has shied away from the political spotlight since leaving the White House.

Bush's father, George H.W. Bush, and McCain both died in 2018.
