Blinken told CNN during an interview in Beijing, “We have seen, generally speaking, evidence of attempts to influence and arguably interfere, and we want to make sure that that's cut off as quickly as possible.”

Blinken met Friday with Chinese President Xi Jinping and senior Chinese officials and said election meddling was one of the issues he raised.

“Any interference by China in our election is something that we're looking very carefully at and is totally unacceptable to us,” the secretary of state said.

President Joe Biden warned Xi against interfering in the election when the two leaders spoke by phone earlier this month, according to U.S. officials. Biden also brought up the issue when he met with Xi in California in November.

China has repeatedly said it has no interest in interfering with the U.S. election.

However, The New York Times reported this month that covert Chinese social media accounts are impersonating American supporters of former President Donald Trump in a campaign to influence the election.
