Democrat Landon Dais has won the seat for the 77th Assembly District in the Bronx in the special election, Spectrum News projects.

According to the Associated Press, with approximately 94% of the expected vote tallied as of 11:50 p.m. Tuesday, Dais had 78.1% of the vote, while Republican candidate Norman McGill had 21.9% of the vote.

The district covers the neighborhoods of Claremont, Concourse, Highbridge, Mount Eden and Morris Heights.

Dais, an attorney who is originally from Harlem, previously made an unsuccessful bid to unseat then-City Councilmember Inez Dickens.

He's originally from Harlem, but his wife is from the Bronx and they've raised their children in the district. He was also endorsed by the Bronx County Democratic Party.

Dais told Spectrum News NY1 he wants to focus on giving children a reason to work and buy homes in the Bronx, and to join the lawmakers' fight in Albany for more housing.

The seat became vacant when Democrat Latoya Joyner abruptly resigned at the beginning of January, saying she was pursuing a different professional opportunity.

She began representing the district in 2015, and had kept her position for nearly a decade.

The Bronx district had a low voter turnout. As of 6 p.m., only 1,072 residents of the district voted throughout the election, the city's Board of Elections said. The district has 64,000 active registered voters, according to the BOE.
