During his press briefing, Mayor Eric Adams answered a new round of questions about the federal probe into his campaign fundraising.
Fielding questions from reporters Tuesday, Adams said he’ll provide details on every trip he’s taken to Turkey saying, “We’ll give you the complete list."
What You Need To Know
- Mayor Eric Adams promised more transparency about his past trips to Turkey, which may be part of the investigation
- Adams also discussed the new legal defense fund that will allow him to raise money to help pay for his private lawyers
- A new Marist College poll of New York City voters found 7 in 10 think the mayor did something wrong in his dealings with Turkey
The mayor was also pressed during the briefing about Rana Abbasova, a City Hall staffer who is currently on leave after an internal review found she acted improperly.
Abbasova was a liaison between the Turkish community and the Adams campaign.
Adams would not confirm whether Abbasova’s home was raided by the FBI or comment on reports she tipped off fellow City Hall staffers after a raid.
Chief Counsel Lisa Zornberg responded regarding Abbasova saying, “Here at City Hall, we’ve done everything by the book, we’re cooperating with it and so we’re not going to comment.”
Nearly three weeks after the investigation in the campaign finances of Mayor Eric Adams came to light, a new poll from Marist College of New York City voters found 7 in 10 think the mayor did something wrong in his dealings with Turkey.
“It’s up to the mayor now to push back on that narrative, it’s a problem,” J. C. Polanco, a political analyst, told NY1.
The poll also showed among city voters, 37% approve of the job Adams has done as mayor, down from 61% in March 2022.
“It’s so important for the mayor to clear the noise,” Polanco said.
A legal defense fund has now been set up to help Adams pay for attorneys as he responds to the ongoing FBI probe.
“Something of this magnitude can go into hundreds of thousands of dollars if not a million dollars,” Adams said.
