Gov. Kathy Hochul, who took part in Sunday’s Pride March in New York City, signed new legislation to protect the LGBTQ+ community.
The bill protects access to gender-affirming care in New York and prevents the state from cooperating with retaliation by other states against gender-affirming care providers, patients, family members and those who access care.
Addressing the crowd in Manhattan Sunday, the governor called on other states across the country to follow New York's lead in making similar changes.
"Because there are people, outside our borders, in other states, in the United States of America, who do not have the same rights that we do here in New York and that is wrong," Hochul said. "We are calling that out, standing together shoulder to shoulder saying we are in solidarity with the rest of America."
The governor also signed three new laws that update the state's legal documents to remove "outdated and stigmatizing terminology."
Hochul was joined at the podium on Sunday by the Rev. Al Sharpton, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer.
