Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., the youngest member of Congress, has been selected as one of 50 members of the Biden-Harris reelection campaign's National Advisory Board.

The selection comes as the president's campaign tries to put Florida in play in 2024.

Following the results of last year's midterm elections, where Republicans won big in Florida, Democrats face a tough road ahead.

But the Biden-Harris campaign isn't counting Florida out, and they've chosen two politicians from the Sunshine State to help lead their campaign efforts: Frost and State Sen. Shevrin Jones, the first openly gay Florida State Senator.

"I think what that really shows is the President is not going to give up on Florida. He's going to play in Florida," Frost said. "He's picked two Black leaders to help lead that charge in the state, and we're gonna be here to do the work." 

President Joe Biden lost Florida to former President Donald Trump in 2020 by roughly four percentage points. The last Democratic presidential candidate to win the state was President Barack Obama in 2012. Back then, there were more registered Democrats in the state than Republicans, a figure which has since flipped. 

Last year, Gov. Ron DeSantis and fellow Republican Sen. Marco Rubio won their statewide reelection campaigns in landslide victories. But Democrats aren't giving up: the Democratic National Committee has been running pro-Biden ads in Florida TV markets, and Democrat Donna Deegan delivered a major upset in the Jacksonville, Fla., mayor's race, defeating a DeSantis-backed Republican candidate to become the city's first female leader.

Frost believes there's often a "disconnect between policy and the politics" on key issues like abortion rights.

"In order to win in Florida, we need to connect those things again and show people that if you want these progressive measures, you can't vote for someone like DeSantis because he wants to focus on banning books," Frost said. 

Frost, the first Gen Z member of Congress, says a big focus for him will be engaging young voters. 

"I'm very interested in helping out with young voters, with organizing across the South, and especially as we work with progressives and bringing our party together to make sure that we reelect the President," said Frost.
