This week the State Democratic Party elected its Executive Leadership team, which includes Jay Jacobs who returns as Chair, and Christine Quinn as Executive Committee Chair.
But of the 11 names on the list, not a single member of of the new team is Hispanic or Latino.
“This is a pattern that we have seen form the Democratic Party here in New York now for some time,” Democratic State Senator Jessica Ramos of Queens said. “And quite frankly, we could just do so much better.”
Latinos make up roughly 30% of the state’s population, and they often vote in larger numbers for Democrats than Republicans.
The controversy over representation within the state party is not new. Six months ago, at the party’s nominating convention, Latino leaders were upset that not a single Latino was on the original Speaker’s list at the convention. It was quickly amended when some took to social media to protest.
“Yeah, I think that once again Latinos are an afterthought for the State Democratic Party,” Professor and Lecturer Eli Valentin said. “Just a step above an asterisk. They did add some Vice Chairs like Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez, but that is not part of the story executive leadership team.”
Party leaders acknowledge they need to do better, but also say they haven’t had many volunteers to serve in leadership positions.
In a statement, Jay Jacobs says, “We’ve made a clear effort to make sure we are inclusive. We’ve made great strides to show our commitment to the Latino community.”
“Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal actually did a poll that showed that Latinas are moving to the Democratic Party at a rate of 15%. That alone shows a sharp increase that should be reflected in the leadership of our party,” Ramos says.
The state party also includes Vice Chairs and At-Large members who are Latino, but none are members of the Executive Leadership team.
