In the one-minute TV ad, Dick Cheney says, “In our nation's 246-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump.”
The former vice president, a Republican who served under President George W. Bush, says Trump tried to steal the 2020 president election by using “lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him.”
“He was a coward,” Dick Cheney says. “A real man wouldn't lie to his supporters. He lost his election, and he lost big. I know it, he knows it, and deep down I think most Republicans know it.”
The former vice president then says he and his wife, Lynne, are proud of Liz Cheney, who faces long odds to retain her congressional seat in Wyoming, for “standing up for the truth, doing what’s right,” adding that “many in our party are too scared to do so.”
“Liz is fearless,” Dick Cheney says. “She never backs down from a fight. There is nothing more important she will ever do than lead the effort to make sure Donald Trump is never again near the Oval Office, and she will succeed.”
“I proudly voted for my daughter," he added. "I hope you will, too.”
Trump’s office did not respond to an email Friday morning seeking comment about the ad.
Also a Republican, Liz Cheney has been a vocal critic of Trump and his efforts to subvert the presidential election by making false claims of widespread fraud. She voted to impeach Trump following the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and is the vice chair of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack and the events that led up to it. Liz Cheney and her father were also the only two Republicans to attend a pro forma House session in January to commemorate the one-year anniverary of the Jan. 6 attack.
Liz Cheney’s unwavering criticism of Trump already cost her the No. 3 Republican position in the House, and she is well behind her Trump-backed Republican challenger, Harriet Hageman, in the polls — a Casper Star-Tribune poll last month had Hageman up 52% to 30%.
The Wyoming primary is Aug. 16.
