Law professor and former statewide office candidate Zephyr Teachout has filed paperwork to run for New York attorney general in 2022.
Following through on comments she made earlier this month, Teachout said she would seek the office if current Attorney General Letitia James decided to run for governor. Sources told Spectrum News 1 earlier this week that James is expected to enter that race in the coming days.
Teachout unsuccessfully ran for governor in the 2014 Democratic primary against Gov. Andrew Cuomo, garnering a third of the vote.
She also ran in 2016 for New York’s 19th Congressional District seat in the Hudson Valley, losing to Republican John Faso.
Her first attempt at attorney general came in 2018 after the seat was left vacant in an election year when Eric Scheiderman resigned after allegations rose of sexual abuse. James ultimately won that primary, and ultimately, the office.
Like the gubernatorial contest, a primary race for attorney general could also be a much contested race next year.
