In one of the most contentious local races, Nicole Malliotakis declared victory over incumbent Max Rose for New York's 11th Congressional District.
While the race has not been officially called yet, Malliotakis holds a sizeable lead over Rose — leading with 58% compared to Rose’s 42%.
In an exclusive interview with NY1, Malliotakis said the people of Staten Island and Brooklyn made their voices heard.
“They sent a very clear message that they want law and order. They want public safety. They want to reopen our economy. They want to preserve this great nation, its values. And they want to stop socialism. I think that was a resounding message that was sent last night,” Malliotakis said.
While Malliotakis agreed that every vote should be counted, she believes she will continue to hold a sizable lead.
She said her winning will bring balance and perspective to a city that has gone “too far left.” She also said the votes send a message that the people of Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn support the NYPD.
“I think people all across this city are upset with how far left our city has gone. Particularly individuals like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has basically brought the Democratic Party and the Congressional Delegation very far to the left. And she’s picked up additional allies in terms of socialists and we need to have not only a two-party system but we need to fight back,” said Malliotakis.
“I think the biggest mistake of the Democratic Party is not fighting back against the socialist fringe. And that came back to haunt them,” she continued.
In a speech overnight, Rose said he will wait for all votes to be counted.
"As a soldier who fought for our democracy, I believe every vote should be counted,” said Rose. “I am not ignorant to the realities of the results that have already been turned in, but I do know my opponent will join me in ensuring that the Board of Elections must conduct a fair and transparent process that demonstrates the strength of our democracy rather than undermining it.”
