Jamaal Bowman, who ousted a long-term incumbent in the Democratic primary, is projected to be the 16th District's next congressman.
The political newcomer and former middle school principal currently leads conservative party candidate Patrick McManus with 83% of the vote. There was no Republican candidate.
Bowman will represent parts of Westchester County and the Bronx. Among the issues he ran on are homelessness, racial equity and educational reform.
"When you look at my district, we're a tale of two districts. We have some of the most affluent areas in the country and we also have the highest number of WIC recipients of any congressional district in the country,” said Bowman.
“Pull on my own personal experiences living in public housing and having friends who have been beaten and harmed by the police, including myself. So all of that is where my values are rooted, and that's the work I'm going to take with me to Washington,” he said.
Earlier this summer, the 44-year-old set the stage for his expected victory, with a decisive primary win over 16-term Representative Eliot Engel. Engel is the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
