William Thompson Sr., who became Brooklyn's first African-American state senator in 1965, has died at the age of 94.

Thompson, who was a member of the state Senate from 1965 to 1968, also served on the City Council, and later became an associate justice of the Appellate Division of State Supreme Court.

He was the father of former City Comptroller Bill Thompson Jr., whom he swore into office in 2002.

"Billy, if you do your usual good job, if you listen to your father, and if God spares my life, eight years from now I want to be back up here," Thompson said to his son at the ceremony, joking that he would like to see the former comptroller run for mayor one day.

Current and former elected officials have been offering their condolences, praising Thompson Sr. as a trailblazer.
