In an exclusive interview on the Road to City Hall, Queens City Councilman Eric Ulrich said he is not running for mayor. NY1's Grace Rauh filed the following report.

"I am running for re-election to the City Council to represent the people of Queens."

With those words, City Councilman Eric Ulrich made Mayor Bill de Blasio's path to re-election that much clearer. The 32-year-old Republican is staying on the sidelines as de Blasio seeks a second term.

"If you look at his lackluster performance and his inability to bring people together in this city, I think that he absolutely can be a one-term mayor, and I think he can be beat," Ulrich said.

Ulrich just won't be the one to do it.

A spokesperson for the mayor's campaign said, "Mayor de Blasio expanded Pre-K for every 4 year-old and raised wages for tens of thousands of workers. Crime is at record lows, jobs are at a record high, and New York City is building affordable housing at a record pace. That is the Mayor's record, and that is what this election will be about."

The election is shaping up to be a referendum on the mayor, and one in which the number of candidates is dwindling. When the mayor learned last week that he would not face criminal charges, Public Advocate Letitia James, a potential challenger, said she expected him to win a second term.

"I look forward to working with the mayor for the next four years to address homelessness and the crisis in affordable housing," she said.

City Comptroller Scott Stringer says he, too, will refrain from mounting a challenge. But unlike the public advocate, he says the mayor is not assured victory.

"There's no sure thing," Stringer said. "We have to go to the voters and earn their respect and trust."

Former NYPD detective and private investigator Bo Dietl is running on his own party line. 

Real estate executive Paul Massey is in the race as well. The Republican has raised $2.5 million so far, but he's spent more than that already.

The mayor took a break from campaigning this past weekend. He was in Florida to catch the Red Sox at Spring Training.
