NEW YORK – Any New Yorker with plans to fly can breathe easy as an extension has been granted to allow your current state ID card to be accepted at check-in at airports.

The Department of Motor Vehicles says it’s still working with the Department of Homeland Security to ensure that all forms of New York State ID cards are acceptable under the Real-ID Act.

The act, passed post 9/11, requires states to receive proof of citizenship for anyone applying for a standard driver’s license or non-driver ID card.

Currently in New York, enhanced driver’s licenses are acceptable because proof of citizenship is needed to receive one.
