A week after Hillary Clinton's bid for the White House came to an end, a new play about the first woman to run for President is making its debut in the city.
"Victoria Woodhull" opens this Thursday.
The show focuses on the advocate's personal life and political career, which includes her historic presidential campaign of 1872.
Woodhull was also the first woman to own a Wall Street brokerage, and one of the first to testify before Congress.
The actress portraying the pioneer wants to help people understand the long fight for gender equality.
"I'm really hoping that this show wakes everybody up to the women who have been fighting so long," actor Elena Kritter says. "For all the women who have been pushing for equal rights. And for the ability to fully express our humanity."
"This is about women in general, and I feel there still is inequity and inequality in some ways," playwright Claude Solnik says. "And the election just pointed out that some of the things in place in Victoria Woodhull's time are very much there today."
The show will run at the Theater for the New City through December 4.
