Noorulain Khawaja is a multimedia journalist at NY1, returning to the city after having served as a reporter for Spectrum News 1 teams in Raleigh, North Carolina and the Hudson Valley.

Noorulain holds a master’s degree in Political and International Affairs Reporting from Columbia University. She spent much of her journalism career producing and reporting throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Before her time at Spectrum News 1, Noorulain lived and worked in New York City as a freelance multimedia reporter and producer for clients such as Al Jazeera TV, i24NEWS and Cheddar News. During this time, she covered the United Nations, the Biden presidential campaign, and the mass protests in Puerto Rico that led to the ouster of the island’s governor.

She also spent seven years as a full-time journalist with Al Jazeera English News Channel, based in Washington, D.C. and Doha, Qatar. For years, Noorulain has amplified the voices of immigrants, including refugees and asylum seekers, including the most recent wave of migrants from New York City to upstate New York. She feels passionate about digging into issues that matter to diverse community members in Queens, a borough where she has family roots.

While in North Carolina, she covered issues impacting everyday Americans, including the housing crisis, minimum wage and voting rights. She developed strong relationships within the Black, Latino, Muslim, LGBTQ and refugee communities, enterprising stories on topics shaping America’s culture wars, including the debates surrounding abortion and gun rights.

In her free time, she enjoys working out, hiking and reading. She looks forward to further exploring the restaurants and coffee shops in the most diverse borough in the city.
