Kelly Mena joined the NY1 team as a multimedia journalist in June 2022.
As a curious person who has always asked a lot of questions, Kelly knew she wanted to be a journalist from a young age.
Kelly graduated with a degree in communications from the University of Florida in 2013. She then worked as a reporter and senior editor at Kings County Politics in Brooklyn. During her time with Kings County Politics, Kelly worked on several investigative pieces diving into unfair and discriminatory housing practices the city government took part in. Her work resulted in a lawsuit ruling in favor of homeowners, resulting in tangible change for Black and brown homeowners in New York City. Images from the investigative pieces were also used in works in the 2019 Whitney Biennial.
Kelly then went on to report with the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and CNN Politics before joining the team at NY1.
Kelly loves to tell stories, engage her community and highlight the issues that matter. When she’s not at work, she enjoys exploring Queens’ parks and Latino food with her one-year-old son, or hanging out with her twin sister, who is also her best friend.
