It’s been over six years since Patrick McGuire started volunteering at God’s Love We Deliver, a nonprofit organization that delivers meals to homebound New Yorkers.

But McGuire admits that it’s hard not to get hungry when he’s surrounded by his favorite foods.

“It can be tempting at times, but I know that it’s going to someone who is in need,” McGuire said.

What You Need To Know

  • Patrick McGuire is a volunteering machine. He spends 30 hours a week helping others at different nonprofits organizations throughout the city

  • He's helped pack meals at God's Love We Deliver, collect coats with New York Cares and teach life skills

  • When McGuire isn't volunteering, he takes on his most important act of service: taking care of his parents

The meals all adhere to each individual person’s dietary needs.

“Because for some who are too ill to either go out and shop for themselves or prepare the meal themselves, we’re their only source of a nutritious meal,” McGuire said.

But his work at God’s Love We Deliver is one serving for this volunteering machine.

The College Point resident dedicates 30 hours of his time every week to making the world a better place.

“Volunteering to me is that I can help improve the quality of life in an individual that hopefully they’ll have a better day, they might enjoy a better quality of life,” he said.

McGuire also helps at New York Cares by contributing to the nonprofit’s annual coat drive.

“It’s such a great joy and very rewarding to be able to give a coat to a New Yorker,” he said at a drive at Citi Field in 2017. “I can’t solve everything, but I know that I can help one person, that means a lot to me.”

McGuire assists at a hospital in Yorkville, teaching CPR, meditation and art.

As a former educator, he mentors young people preparing for college and the workforce.

He says his most meaningful job is caring for his elderly parents

“I thought as a son that is my responsibility,” McGuire said.

His commitment to taking care of others drives him in so much of what he does. That was on full display when he brought a God’s Love We Deliver meal to Milagros, a very appreciative homebound senior.

“You are an earth angel,” Milagros said.

“That reinforces my love of service to New Yorkers and volunteer service,” McGuire said about the delivery.

For making service to others a lifestyle, Patrick McGuire is our New Yorker of the Week.
