NEW YORK - Maybe it was because it was a Saturday. Maybe it was because it was a summer Saturday.
But New Yorkers had about as good a reaction as you could ask for when the power went out on Saturday.
The city took it in stride in so many ways.
We helped each other get out of the subways in the dark. Traffic signals were out at dozens of intersections on the West Side of Manhattan.
The NYPD moved in to direct traffic at some. Drivers fended for themselves at others.
But in many spots New Yorkers stepped in to the street to bring order to the chaos.
As the sun set with the blackout dragging on, at building after building we helped each other. Checking to make sure no one was stuck in an elevator, checking on elderly neighbors.
Some stores and restaurants shut down. But others worked a little harder to stay open. At the Hudson Market in Hell’s Kitchen they worked by flashlight.
There were a lot of disappointments on Saturday night with shows that “couldn’t” go on. Most Broadway theaters shut down for the night. And yet the music continued. At "Rock of Ages" the show happened in front of the theatre.
And at Carnegie Hall the choir that was supposed to perform "inside" took over the street.
So to all of the New Yorkers who turned darkness into light when the power went out.
