A rough ride along one Staten Island street has come under control since drivers reached out to NY1 For You for help. Our Susan Jhun has their reaction.
"With NY1 coming, they move very quick," resident Carey Spearman said.
A day to clean up an unsafe mess surrounding an unfinished construction project that started two years ago along Van Duzer and Swan Streets on Staten Island.
Last week, NY1 told you how those in the neighborhood said construction came to a halt several months ago and the rugged road has stayed untouched since.
"It's an obstacle course," Spearman had said. "You have to watch the sewer tops. If you go over the bottom, your car goes out."
"If you turn off to the side, you are going the wrong direction," Spearman had continued. "If somebody jumps in front of you, there is no place for you to go."
"We thought when the spring came they would be back over here to repave, but that hasn't happened, obviously," a resident named Marion said.
After drivers contacted us, we found that the construction project belongs to the city's Economic Development Corporation (EDC).
A spokesperson told us that the site is part of a larger infrastructure project to provide a backup water supply to Staten Island.
He told us that the EDC's contractor was responsible for maintaining the site while it is under construction, and that after our call the contractor was instructed to immediately fix conditions at the site.
The spokesperson said street paving is scheduled to be completed by the end of June.
After our first story aired, the open sidewalk was roped off and barricades blocking the road were removed.
"Now the cars don't have to worry about going around the barricades plus the sewer tops," Spearman said. "So it's made it safer that way."
Spearman says he's cautiously optimistic that the EDC will come back and pave the road.
We will keep you updated.
