More than 1.1 million early in-person votes have been cast over nine days in New York statewide amid a closely watched race for governor, according to numbers released Monday by the state Board of Elections.
All told, 1,178,674 votes have been cast statewide. Early voting has been in place since 2019 and was not an option in 2018, the last time gubernatorial candidates topped their parties' tickets.
Additional takeaways from the early voting numbers:
- This past Sunday was the busiest day of early voting in New York, with 200,689 ballots cast.
- Turnout in Democratic strongholds like Brooklyn reached 135,239 votes and Manhattan reached 133,618 votes.
- On Long Island, where Republicans hope to do well, there were 98,226 votes cast in Suffolk County and 123,115 votes cast in Nassau County.
- There were 746,040 votes cast outside of New York City; the five boroughs accounted for 432,634 early votes.
Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul is running for a full term, facing Republican opponent Lee Zeldin. Voters are also deciding races for state attorney general, comptroller and U.S. Senate as well as multiple battleground House districts across the state.
And voters are determining whether to borrow $4.2 billion to help pay for environmental infrastructure projects.
