ARNOLD, Mo.—Gov. Mike Kehoe hand-delivered the first two signs under a new state program designed to promote support for law enforcement during an event in Arnold Thursday morning to recognize the city and Jefferson County.
The two municipalities were the first two be designated as “Blue Shield” communities. As of Thursday, a total of 55 municipalities had earned the honor, including Town and Country, Vinita Park, Florissant, Festus, O’Fallon and Brentwood, among others in the St. Louis region.
To earn the designation, the municipalities have to shown a commitment to public safety funding, have an officer recruiting and retention program and agree to participate in regional anti-crime task forces, among other requirements.
“Blue Shield” municipalities will be eligible to apply for a share of state grants for law enforcement training and equipment. Kehoe’s budget request for $10 million to fund the grants made it through the House and is under consideration in the Senate.
“It's really about pride in the community, that these communities back the men and ladies that wear the uniform, keep communities safe. I think it's all about that public statement that, ‘hey we are for law enforcement, we want a safe community,’” he said.
