At the direction of the U.S. President Donald J. Trump, Gov. Josh Green ordered the U.S. and Hawaii state flags to be lowered to honor Pope Francis, who died on Monday at the age of 88.
The flags will be flown at half-staff at the Hawaii State Capitol and all state offices and agencies as well as the Hawaii National Guard from today until the date of interment.
“Pope Francis was a beacon of compassion, humility, and service,” said Green in a statement. “His unwavering commitment to the marginalized and his call for global solidarity have left an indelible mark on the world. Hawai‘i joins the global community in mourning his passing and honoring his profound legacy.”
Green encouraged Hawaii residents to reflect on Pope Francis’ enduring message of peace, justice and care for the vulnerable.
