WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Every year, the Westerville Area Civitan Club puts on an Easter egg hunt for those with special needs.

What You Need To Know

  • The Westerville Area Civitan Club hosts an Easter egg hunt for those with disabilities

  • There are no age restrictions

  • Beeper eggs are available for visually impaired

“We have no age restriction, and we’ve been doing this for over 30 years. I got involved with it because of my granddaughter, who is visually impaired,” Volunteer Maryetta Harper said.

This hunt allows those with disabilities to participate in an egg hunt just like everyone else during the holiday. Susan Sherman takes her daughter with autism to the egg hunt every year.

“She’s 30 this year, and we’ve been coming for the egg hunts forever because it’s something she looks forward to every year, as you can hear, and she is so excited to do this event, so I’m happy it’s open to all ages,” Sherman said.

Sherman is very grateful that this is a way for not only her daughter to be included, but all others with special needs.

“All the other kids go to the Easter egg hunt, and you can’t take these kids to that, and plus they end at age 6, 5 and so she’s 30, but mentally she’s 5 or 6, so she’s happy to have this every year,” Sherman said.

The eggs went fast. The hunt was over in just about three minutes.

“The kids have a wonderful time. It’s a lot of work involved, but it makes it all worthwhile when you see the children having such a wonderful time,” Harper said.
