LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Covering the biggest sporting event in Kentucky takes every member of the Spectrum News 1 Kentucky staff. It also means we often look to others to help add perspective and context to the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby.

For our coverage of the Oaks and Derby, we have tapped a veteran horseman, who not only knows the Derby, but Louisville, too.

Byron King is News Editor at BloodHorse, a leading publication covering Thoroughbred racing. He’s been with BloodHorse since 2019. King specializes in covering major racing events, including the Kentucky Derby, and is well known for his “Derby Dozen,” a regular feature in BloodHorse in which he ranks and reviews top contenders for the Run for the Roses. King is also the president of the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters.

Before joining BloodHorse, King also worked as a reporter for the Daily Racing Form and Kentucky Downs and Ellis Park. He also served as a podcast host for the Horse Racing Radio Network.

A graduate of the University of Arizona, King is based in Louisville. We’re excited to have him join us for coverage of the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby.
