He works at Mountain Spirits Liquor in Julian, a small mountain community in San Diego County. On Monday morning, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake shook things up around 10 a.m., with Julian near the epicenter.

“Within 15 years of living here, this is the highest magnitude I’ve ever encountered,” Carneiro said. “There’s been others in the past, of course, but none to this measurement.”

The earthquake also knocked the power out for almost 600 customers, including the California Wolf Center, a nonprofit dedicated to wild wolf conservation and education.

Joe Breshears, the volunteer and outreach coordinator at the center, said his first thought was a bulldozer knocking into his office; his next thought was to immediately check on the wolves, walking all of their fence lines to make sure the ground had not shifted and their wolves were still safe and secure.

Breshears also said the power was out for a few hours, cutting off their phones and internet. They were worried about the meat they fed the wolves spoiling, but thankfully, the power was restored after a few hours.

Carneiro said everyone has been talking about the quake up and down Main Street and it’s a Monday they will not soon forget.

“This is definitely one for the books, for sure,” he said.
