ST. LOUIS—Each year, children look forward to seeing their white hard-boiled egg drop into colorful containers and pulling out a brightly colored egg after a few moments. With egg prices constantly on the minds of adults this year, here are a few ways to keep the tradition alive.

Many craft stores sell plastic and wooden eggs of various sizes, including the size that comes in egg cartons. While kids would not have the opportunity to crack and peel the egg before enjoying a hard-boiled egg beneath, they may enjoy being able to paint an egg to keep as a decoration that’s brought out annually.

Good House Keeping suggests paper maché eggs, paper eggs and ceramic eggs as options that could be painted or colored. They say the ceramic eggs can be dyed.

For those still wanting to dye something, it doesn’t have to be an egg. Jet-Puffed has released a Dip and Decorate kit for as little as two dollars. The all-in-one kit includes six vibrant colorings, three bright pens, two delicious drizzles, an egg crate, tongs and a bag of Jet-Puffed Jumbo Extra Large Marshmallows.

Other online musings of alternatives to dying eggs include dying small boiled potatoes, painting rocks, painting terracotta pots and planting flowers or herbs in them, painting bamboo shaker eggs, dying cloths and dying clothing. One person said they used golf balls instead.
