TAMPA, Fla. — Over 200 were killed at a popular nightclub in the Dominican Republic on April 8 when its cement roof collapsed.
One Bay area woman shares how she’s helping others touched by the tragedy.
Tanya Hernandez is the president of the Dominican Association of Tampa. The group's social media page has been a hub of information for local family members looking for more information regarding the Jet Set nightclub roof collapse in Santo Domingo that killed more than 200 people.
“We also shared the locations that were looking for donations,” she said.
For Hernandez, it hits close to home — her third cousin, Carolina Perez Vargas and Perez’s boyfriend were killed in the collapse.
Hernandez says she’s been in contact with her family and helping in the best ways she can.
“I have been sending them messages and respected the solemnity of the situation, the gravity of the situation,” she said.
While Hernandez knows she isn’t the only one affected by what happened, she’s hoping to help others.
The association is hosting a vigil for those affected by tragedy at the at the Instituto Politécnico de Tampa Corp.
“We feel worse, because we are not here giving them the support, or a hug to our friends or family members, but from afar, we are a town of faith,” Hernandez said.
She said it’s not going to be easy, but she’s hoping everyone affected can lean on each other for support.
“This is going to be a healing process — a process of understanding — and we’re all going to have to experience our pain, and we’ll have to give ourselves some time,” Hernandez said.
In the meantime, Hernandez said she and her group will continue to share information and help those who need it the most.
Among those who died in the roof collapse were former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel and merengue singer Rubby Perez.
