Gov. Kathy Hochul is calling on federal officials to release the family that was detained during last week’s immigration raid on a farm in Jefferson County.

A mother and her three children were taken to a detention center in Texas.

This Saturday, the Sackets Harbor community is planning a rally, which will march past the home of ‘Border Czar’ Tom Homan.

What You Need To Know

  • A rally is set for Saturday in Sackets Harbor, as people hope to voice their thoughts on the farm raid last week

  • A mother, and her three children were taken to a detention center in Texas

  • The rally is expected to start in the village, and people are expected to peacefully walk to the Sackets Harbor home of 'Border Czar' Tom Homan.

“They've been following the immigration court process and they're in the process, doing it quote unquote, the right way,” New York Immigration Coalition President & CEO Murad Awawdeh said.

The New York Immigration Coalition says the family — a mother and her three children (grades 3, 10 & 11) were taken from this farm in its harbor last week by immigration officials who were doing everything the government required them to do. It still didn't matter.

“That's why this is even more, outlandish in this moment, is this is a clear, clear slap in the face to our rights,” Awawdeh added.

One other eye-opener, the coalition says, is where this happened — Sackets Harbor. Homan, who is responsible for these types of raids on what he calls illegal aliens, lives in Sackets Harbor.

“It's really unfortunate that he has sent his ICE agents to go after his neighbors,” Awawdeh said.

The coalition tells us this raid was supposed to be the execution of an arrest warrant for one employee.

Spectrum News 1 has reached out to Homan for comment and has not heard back.

However, there is a large group of people within Sackets Harbor and its surrounding communities who are hopeful that he will hear them this coming Saturday.

“It's really bothersome to me of how this went down with those kids,” Jefferson County Democratic Party Chair Corey Decillis said.

Deciillis, chair of the Jefferson County Democratic Party, is helping organize a rally on March on Saturday that will take protesters right past the house of Tom Homan.

“I certainly agree with getting the bad people out of this country. I guess that's probably going against my Democratic values. But, you've got to do it with a scalpel. You can't go in with an axe,” Decillis said.

With that said, Decillis tells us that he understands immigration is a very political issue. However, he believes Saturday's rally will transcend that.

He's hopeful for a strong presence, a peaceful march and representation from an entire community that he says, seems very upset.

“When you're talking children and deportation that's not what the American people voted for,” Decillis said of his belief this raid is more than politics.

Republican Assemblyman Scott Gray was asked to attend Saturday's rally.

He says he's been in direct contact with federal authorities and Gov. Hochul, who has already called for this entire family to be released.

Gray says he will wait for a full report on what exactly happened before determining what he believes the next steps should be.

Saturday’s rally is set to begin at 2 p.m. It will start at the village’s welcome center, and make its way past Homan’s house.
