MILWAUKEE — While the excitement of Opening Day at American Family Field was on the minds of many—so was Bob Uecker—a big piece missing from this year’s big game.

His life and legacy were celebrated during Monday’s home opener.

“He meant the world. He is the Milwaukee Brewers. He is a bigger-than-life figure,” said Brewers fan William Farnsworth.

Many fans wore their Uecker jerseys and paid tribute in big and small ways.

“I’ve got a Uecker bracelet, he’s got one too,” said fan Christine Mullein. “Because this year, baseball, it’s all about missing Uecker. Unfortunately, he’s not here, but his spirit is here. The sun is out, he’s shining for us.”

Touches of his impact were seen throughout American Family Field, which included a new banner in right field and his signature in the outfield grass.

Outside, his statue was covered with flowers and Miller Lite’s bringing fans by to take pictures.

Some fans said this season will not be the same without him.

“Just listening to Bob and how he has been the soundtrack of summer for the longest time,” said fan Pat Erikson. “I’ve been spoiled for Harry Carry and Bob Uecker in my lifetime. Those are two of the greatest ever to do their craft. He is going to be sorely missed big time.”

“For me as a fan, its been my whole life that Uecker has been the announcer and it meant so much even to my father, my uncles, my aunt is a die-hard fan who is here with me today,” said fan Ellison Kazmierski. “It just means a lot to be here to pay homage. It’s somber, but it’s also celebratory.”

While the loss of an icon brought somber tones to an exciting day, many said being back at the stadium is the best way to celebrate his life.
