"They really need what we're getting them,” Palazzolo-Pellicane said. “No, nobody really comes down here and thinks about them."
Palazzolo-Pellicane is the founder of Lou's Helping Hand Foundation. She started the nonprofit in memory of her brother who died in 2017.
"I just felt that he needed to be remembered because he had such a huge heart of gold,” she said. “And I started it and left it in God's hands. And every day, someone approaches me with some great idea, and we just go with it."
Simply put, when people need help, the foundation is there with donations and an extra pair of hands. Among their efforts, the team provides clothing and essentials for foster children.
"I know that they are the most vulnerable and they don't have much," Palazzolo-Pellicane said.
They donate to a community pantry on the South Shore of Staten Island. They throw birthday parties for children whose families can't afford them.
"It's really nice to, you know, see them enjoying themselves, eating everything they can inside and, you know, playing with other kids and just being a kid," she said.
And twice a month, Palazzolo-Pellicane makes her way through and around the ferry terminals. Her brother, of course, would have been right there with her.
"He saw anybody that had, little vulnerability and right away he would want to help them. So he, you know, he would be really happy," she said.
For showing compassion for others and carrying on her brother's legacy, Juliana Palazzolo-Pellicane is our New Yorker of the Week.
