The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction has closed the Ahihi Street Footbridge (Bridge 158) in Kalihi indefinitely because it has significant damage to its metal railings.
The City urges the public to avoid the bridge, which is now closed to all pedestrians and bicyclists. Entering the stream embankment to cross the Kamanaiki Stream or loitering on the footbridge is also prohibited.
In a news release, the City advised students of Kalihi Uka Elementary School to plan an alternate route for commuting to and from school.
A recent inspection of the bridge showed severe corrosion throughout the bridge railings, which has also caused the failure of all transverse metal supports beneath the footbridge deck. Additionally, at the Nihi Street end of the bridge, the upstream railing anchor supports have failed, creating a hazardous one-foot gap between the deck and the railing.
The public may contact the Department of Design and Construction at 808-768-8400 with any questions.
