ST. LOUIS—It’s warming up and for numerous residents, that means shedding the malfunctioning appliances, old mattresses and other large items.
For years, St. Louis City and surrounding municipalities like Kinloch felt under siege of illegal dumping. Luckily, inexpensive or free options exist to be out-with-the-old appliance before buying your in-with-the-new appliance.
Before getting into where to simply drop off unwanted items, here’s a look at places to give your item a second life with someone else. Below we have local counties and cities have options for when it’s just time to get rid of it.

Call 314-371-0400 to schedule Habitat for Humanity to retrieve your items but the items must be in clean and in working order. Among the accepted items are appliances, building and construction materials in good condition, doors, cabinets and windows, new carpet/linoleum/rugs, plumbing and electrical fixtures, lumber, hardware, roofing and tile.

Pick up services could be available in your area. Their home office is at 292 Hanley Industrial Ct., Brentwood, MO 63114. They accept these items.
Salvation Army’s main number is 314-535-0057. For those looking for donation pick up services call 1-800-728-7825 or 1-888-574-2587. They also take vehicles and vehicle donators can call 1-877-725-8276.

If you cannot deliver your item to one of the mentioned places below or live outside one of these communities, it’s best to look at the refuse/trash services of your city or county on how to properly dispose of unwanted large items.

There are over 25 drop off recycling sites for anyone looking to get rid of hazardous waste such as paints, fuel products, yard chemicals, and batteries. Over a dozen engine firehouses are drop off sites.
The city’s recycling program collects multiple electronics and appliances on scheduled bulk pick-up days. Notably, TVs and computers do not make the list of accepted items in this program.

St. Louis Household Hazardous waste can help residents with pesky paints, fuels, and other chemicals.
The county has six facilities listed that provide options for construction and demolition materials.

In St. Charles City, residents can use the Republic Service’s bulky item pickup option. Customers are granted two free bulky item pickups each week, which are items that cannot fit into their trash can. However, appliances will carry a charge of $25 per item and electronics a $75 charge per item. Those charges would be added to the resident’s monthly bill.
St. Charles County’s Recycle Works takes a large variety of big items and many small ones. Those looking to ditch appliances here will need to deliver it. Recycle Works’ collection fee for appliances is $15.
Another option for removing appliances is Ron’s Recycle Service. They’ll take away appliances from the driveway, near the garage door or carport.
Saint Charles County Health Department said it’s important to dispose things the right way and not only to avoid legal penalties.
“There’s a very major environmental impact when people illegally dump items,” said Ryan Tilley, Environmental Division Director. “When they dump something that can harm the environment, it can harm people and it can harm waterways and the plants that live in them.”
Republic Services takes care of bulky item pick-ups for Jefferson County and can be reached at (573) 635-8805 to schedule this service for a fee.
In April, the county will hold two Spring Clean up events. From April 7 to April 11 west of highway 54 and then from April 14 to April 18 east of highway 54. Things like mattresses, TVs, microwave and more will be picked up from single-family residences, duplexes, triplexes and townhouses with residential cart service.
