After a fire caused construction delays, the affordable housing nonprofit organization, EAH Housing, announced on Thursday that applications are being accepted for the Kai Olino Family Apartments in ʻEleʻele.
“Āhē Group is pleased to continue our work with the County of Kauai to expand housing opportunities for Kauai residents,” said Āhē Group President Makani Maeva in a release. Āhē Group is considered one of the state’s leaders in developing affordable housing, according to the release, with a focus on multifamily, senior and workforce housing.
“Together with our partners at EAH Housing, we are confident that Kai Olino Family Apartments will become a thriving community where generations of Kauai families can live, grow, and prosper,” Maeva said.
The waitlist for the first 23-unit building opened March 17. Applications are due March 24; a lottery will be held via Zoom on March 25.
Applications for the second 27-unit building will be accepted from March 22 with an April 7 deadline. The lottery for the second building will be held April 8.
The first 250 applications received for each building will be included in their respective lotteries with subsequent applications placed on a waiting list, according to officials. Those interested must apply separately for each lottery pool. A third lottery will be held in early 2026 for the final 23-unit building.
Prospective residents can apply online on the EAH Housing website.
Located at 61 Okupu Street in ʻEleʻele, Kai Olino Family Apartments has 73 multifamily apartments overlooking Hanapepe Bay at the Port Allen Commercial Pier, in addition to two- and three-bedroom units and an outdoor community space with ocean views. It’s located near ʻEleʻele Shopping Center, schools, medical services, recreational areas and eateries. Rental rates are based on 30% to 100% of the area median income.
The occupancy date for the first building is April 7; the second building is expected to be ready by May 20. Those employed as teachers and essential workers will be given priority for housing.
