HEBRON, Ky. — Women are breaking barriers and leading the charge in historically male-dominated fields such as aviation. At the Amazon Air Hub, hundreds of woman took part in the first ever all-female crew. They ran operations and made sure customers received their packages on time.
“It’s not just the crews that actually process this. It is a total inclusive group of folks that are making this happen,” said Stephanie Mahaffey, senior operations leader. “On such a historic event. [I’m] super proud also that all three shows collectively have female led teams today.”
Mahaffey said the milestone displayed just how far the company has grown and she couldn’t be more impressed with the work they’re doing.
While Mahaffey worked on the ground, other women took charge in the control tower. Calhoun Clifton, the ramp stretch senior operations manager made sure planes were packed up and ready to go.
“I’m just monitoring to make sure we get our last downloads in on time to give sort enough time to process and get those cans back out so we’re able to upload and depart onetime,” Clifton said.
Before they could pack up cargo, robots helped sort and direct packages to where they need to go.
Dee Stenson, a longtime employee at the hub, said the day was life-changing.
“It’s amazing. It’s a one up for us.... We’re not in the back anymore. We don’t have to be quiet,” Stenson said.
As the first shift wrapped up, dozens of women came together to celebrate their win. Proudly shouting, “Amazon!”
