WISCONSIN — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation's (WisDOT) Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is warning of an uptick in online vehicle sale fraud statewide.
"We started to receive consumer complaints about people paying for vehicles online, submitting the money through a wire transfer and then unfortunately never receiving a vehicle," Maura Schifalacqua, the dealer and agent section chief for the Wisconsin DMV, said.
Schifalacqua said there should definitely be warning signs or red flags that potential car or truck buyers spot before moving forward with any sale.
"Looking at their website: Are there misspellings on the website? Does something seem wrong? Are they only interacting with you through e-mail or Facebook Marketplace Messenger and not talking to you on the phone?" Schifalacqua said.
