As Pope Francis battles pneumonia in both lungs, Catholics stopped by St. Patrick’s Cathedral to keep him in their prayers.

“I love him. He’s 88. He’s old. And you just pray for him. And whatever needs to happen will happen at the right time,” Philadelphia resident Marilyn O’Hara said.

“We were a little shocked to hear the news. My husband informed me, and I couldn’t believe it,” Rochester resident Kathy Grady said.

The 88-year-old pontiff has been in the hospital since Friday after his battle with bronchitis worsened.

The Vatican says tests and X-rays show a “complex clinical picture” and did not elaborate on how long the pope may be hospitalized.

“We’re united in prayer. That’s exactly what the pope asks us to do all the time. He never finishes greeting a group of people, he never finishes greeting the whole world without saying please pray for me,” Diocese of Brooklyn Bishop Robert Brennan said.

Brennan has been in the presence of the pope multiple times, including when Pope Francis led prayer at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 2015.

“My recollection is the effect that he has on people. There was just such an exuberance in the air,” Brennan said.

2025 is the Jubilee Year in the Catholic Church, marking the incarnation of Jesus Christ.

The theme is “Pilgrims of Hope.” That’s something the bishop says sums up the pope’s ministry as people reflect and pray for him to recover.

“We have a lot of problems today and I think he really tried to make a lot of it better through the faith and help us remember God and Jesus in it,” New Orleans resident Cheryl Walsh said.
