New York state Attorney General Letitia James said New York is prepared to respond when it comes to immigration enforcement.

On Thursday morning, the Department of Justice sued the city of Chicago and state of Illinois, as well as top elected officials, seeking to end their ability to provide sanctuary for illegal immigrants.

When asked what happens if the federal government targets New York, James said Democratic state attorneys general have been preparing strategies for this moment for months.

“This election was not the outcome that we wanted. But nonetheless, here we are," she said.

“We have been preparing strategy, looking at the law, analyzing Project 2025, looking at jurisdiction, looking at venue, looking at all of the issues and challenges that have come our way,” she told NY1 political reporter Bobby Cuza on “Inside City Hall.” “And we are prepared to respond, to defend the sovereignty of the state of New York,” she added.

She also said immigrants are part of the nation’s infrastructure and economy.

“It’s important that this attorney general, joined with other like-minded attorneys general, again, that we defend the law, that we would defend vulnerable and marginalized populations, and that we recognize that we do not want violent felons here in this country, but there are individuals who contribute so much to our economy, so much to all that we believe in, who share our values. They need to be protected,” she said.

In a memo, new U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi recently called for a review of the federal prosecution into President Donald Trump, as well “federal cooperation” with other investigations into Trump by James and Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg.

James, who won a civil fraud case against the president, said that if she is called to testify in Washington, D.C., about the cases she was involved with, she will bring “all of the experts” and “all of the evidence” she has against the president.

“If they want me to bare my entire case, I will do just that,” she said.

“These claims of retribution by Ms. Bondi and others are frivolous. They brought them before in court, and they were declared frivolous in the past,” she added. “As I’ve said to individuals who want to come after me, bring it on. I have nothing to fear. The law is on my side.”
