Officer body cam video shows the beating of Robert Brooks last month at Marcy Correction Facility in upstate New York.

While it’s shocking to many, it doesn’t surprise Derrick Hamilton, who spent time behind bars.

“It brought back so many memories of when I was incarcerated of hearing and seeing people abused,” Hamilton, deputy director for Perlmutter Center for Legal Justice, said.

Brooks later died at a Utica hospital. His death sparking national outrage and calls for an investigation into the prison. “This is a state-wide correctional issue. This isn’t just Marcy. We found a video of Marcy of what happens all over the state,” Hamilton said.

Dozens gathered in Brooklyn on Tuesday to devise ways to push for changes in the state prison system.

Meanwhile, state lawmakers prepare for legislative session to begin on Wednesday.

“You eliminate this problem by cutting it a problem at its head,” state Assemblymember Edward Gibbs said.

Gibbs was also formerly incarcerated. He says he’s toured Marcy Correctional Facility following the death of Brooks.

“We talked to every incarcerated in the last two dorms Robert Brooks was in, and he had no fights and no altercations. Why did you beat this guy?” he said.

Gibbs co-wrote a letter with state Sen. Julia Salazar circulating to members of the Legislature requesting their signature.

The letter, seen by NY1, demands that Gov. Kathy Hochul close the facility.

According to Gibbs, 30 lawmakers have already agreed to sign on. It will be published and sent to the governor on Friday.

“She closed two prisons already. She’s slated to close five. I think the rest would be a matter of transfers,” Gibbs said.
