BUFFALO, N.Y. — How far are you willing to go to rep your favorite team? Some super fans wear bright costumes or have long days out at Highmark Stadium.
Others wear it on their heads.
It's something you can see at Cove & Mill Barbering Company in South Buffalo. Behind the cut and color is master barber Matt Wathem.
Spectrum News 1 caught up with giving Matt giving his son, Cameron, a special style.
"I was born in California, so [I] was kind of raised up as a Niners fan," he said. "Well, once we moved here, I've always been a Bills fan."
Cam followed suit and got to see his dad really hone his craft.
"[I was] doing jobs that I did not while doing, [but] doing this makes a huge difference, you really get to see the passion. And every haircut I do, I try to do better," Matt added.
Some are bold enough to ask for a Buffalo Bills logo, generally back and center.
"So the way I do it is I have a stencil and I spray on with some color," he explained. "I take my trimmers and just get the outline, and then I wipe it out and I freehand all the detail work."
This time of year, calls come and go to show support.
"It could be a lot. Could be a little. It's been picking up lately. I think it all depends on really how the Bills are doing," he said.
No matter how many of these Matt does, it brings him back.
"When I was a kid going to barbershops, it was completely different," he said. "It was always like, you're getting one or two haircuts. A high and tight or a buzzcut. And to be able to do this for my kids, it means a lot."
It's not just time in the chair together, but what the cut represents for this father-son relationship in public.
"I think it's really cool, especially when one of their friends come in and say their friend so-and-so, Cameron, my son has one, and they want that done," Wathem remarked.
Back home on the couch catching four quarters, that family bond is one shared by the entire Bills Mafia.
"As a kid, I remember watching the game with my father, who recently passed a couple years ago," he said. "So, you know, it doesn't mean a lot, but we get to watch the game together.
"It's pretty cool, to be honest. Just to see our fanbase, man," Matt added. "What we're willing to do just to show that love."
