AUSTIN, Texas — An influencer from Austin was disqualified and banned from the New York City Marathon after his camera crew obstructed other runners by riding electric bikes while filming him for social media.
Matthew Choi, 29, participated in the annual race on Sunday. Choi regularly posts running content to social media and boasts 463k followers on TikTok and 404k on Instagram.
According to CBS News, the New York Road Runners — the nonprofit organization that runs the marathon — said in a statement that Choi violated their competition rules and their code of conduct by having e-bikes on the course.
In a video posted to Instagram, Choi apologized for his actions, saying he “(expletive) up” and was selfish for having the crew, which consisted of his brother and videographer, follow him on the course while riding e-bikes.
“I have no excuses, full stop…We endangered other runners, we impacted people going for PBs [personal bests], we blocked people from getting water, and with the New York City Marathon being about everyone else and about the community, I made it about myself,” he said.
“And for anyone I impacted, I’m sorry. To be clear, this is 100% on me, it wasn’t my brother trying to get a shot, it wasn’t my partners asking me to get content. I just got really excited about the thought of hitting Sub 3 New York and I got overzealous about getting all the shots…It won’t happen again. My word is my bond,” he continued.
In addition to being disqualified from the annual race, Choi was also banned from any future New York City running events. Though Choi has an opportunity to appeal the ban, he says he won’t be doing so.
“I made my bed so I’m gonna lay in it,” he said in the video.
The New York City Marathon became the world’s largest marathon this year with over 55,000 finishers.
