“Sukkot of Light” brought Jews together at The Field of Light at Freedom Plaza in Midtown.

What You Need To Know

  • Sukkot is a holiday celebrated under a Sukkah

  • A Sukkah is a temporary dwelling that religious leaders say Jews stayed in as they escaped Egypt and headed to the Holy Land

  • Some attendees reflected on the Israel-Hamas war and the need for positivity they said

  • Gabby Rose from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, said Sukkot is the opportunity to celebrate after the more somber holidays Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur

“It’s a holiday of Abundance of gratitude and being present and setting intentions for the year,” Sara Armet, organizer at Chabad Young Professionals Upper East Side, said.

Sukkot is a festival spent in a hut structure called a Sukkah.

Religious leaders and Jewish tradition say Sukkahs were used by Jews escaping slavery in Egypt and going to the holy land, which is now Israel.

“It’s intentional. It’s about thinking why we are here trying to make the most out of it. Bring joy, positivity,” Rabbi Avi Winner said during the event.

They need that positivity as they reflect on a year of war for Israel and a rise in antisemitism after the Oct. 7 attack.

“The last year has been tough on every Jewish person in the city, all my friends, all my family,” Mikey Greenblatt, attendee from Englewood, New Jersey, said.

“At this time more than ever in the world, the world needs as much light [as] we are in the field of light the holiday of Sukkot, which is all about the unity of people,” Rabbi Chanchy Kugel said during the event.

Gabby Rose from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, says this holiday allows for celebration after more the somber Jewish holidays.

“We have Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, which are more serious. We’re in synagogue, we’re praying for a good year, then Sukkot is all those things blessings coming down,” Rose said.

According to organizers, the lessons of Sukkot are not only just applicable for the Jewish community but for all New Yorkers.

The lights across the plaza symbolize “being a bright light” when there is darkness.
